Data Policy Subgroup
The Subgroup on Agency Science Data Policies will examine issues surrounding the development of publicly-available science data policy statements for all appropriate agencies and departments. Examples of components of an agency science data policy may include: statement of guiding principles for digital scientific data preservation and access; assignment of responsibilities within the agency; description of mechanisms for access to specialized data policies; statement of intentions and mechanisms for cooperation, coordination, and partnerships; and provisions for updating and revisions.
The focus of this subgroup is to promote the goals of the IWGDD for effective planning and management of the full digital scientific data life cycle. The Group is charged with developing a written report addressing the following items:
- Describe good examples and best practices from among existing agency policies.
- Define the essential guiding principles and key concepts and components of agency policies.
- Develop a template for use by agencies in developing their own policies.

| Policy-making for Research Data in Repositories: A Guide | http://www.disc-uk.org/docs/guide.pdf | The guide is a public deliverable of the JISC-funded DISC-UK DataShare project (2007-2009)1 which established institutional data repositories and related services at the partner institutions: the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford and Southampton. It is a distilled result of the experience of the partners, together with Digital Life Cycle Research & Consulting. | PepiFabbiano (5/22/09) |

| OSTI Blog: Sharing Results is the Engine of Scientific Progress | http://www.osti.gov/ostiblog/home/entry/sharing_results_is_the_engine | OSTI's mission is to help scientists share their results, but what role do results play in science? Here we present a simple model of one of the most basic uses of results, namely as the engine of scientific progress. Research results are more than just accumulated knowledge. | DavidWojick (6/22/09) |

| A report on the range of policies required for and related to digital curation, Digital Curation Centre (DCC) | DCC_Curation_Policies_Report.pdf | A number of calls for open access to research outputs have been issued in recent years, such as those of the OECD and RCUK.1 As open access is itself premised on effective curation, these developments have spurred policy creation. Research Councils recognise that curation begins with the initial research idea and most consequently now require a data management and sharing plan as part of applications. | SylviaSpengler (9/2/09) |
| DCC Data Management Plan Content Checklist, Draft Template for Consultation | DCC_data_management_plan_templateDMP_checklist.pdf | Funders increasingly require their grant-holders to produce data management plans.1 This content template draws upon their requirements to suggest ‘preliminary’ and ‘full’ versions of a data management plan. The preliminary version summarises the main issues most research funders expect researchers to address at the application stage. | SylviaSpengler (9/4/09) |
